Agriculture Online Programs
As the growing season approaches, we wanted to continue offering learning opportunities in agriculture and sustainable practices. Below are two upcoming workshops to teach you gardening and sustainable practices at home!
Basic Gardening (May 5th-May 26th)
The Ville focuses on promoting food security and sustainable practices in our community. We encourage a full life cycle thought process around food production, selection, distribution, processing and waste reduction. This class will provide education about planting, maintenance, and individual household size solutions that can benefit you, your community, and the environment. We'll teach a series of theory and planning workshops, followed by practical hands-on learning through implementation.
Wildcrafting (May 7th-May 28th)
What is wildcrafting? Foraging or the practice of harvesting plants from their natural or wild habitat, primarily for food and medicinal purposes. It is not limited to wilderness areas. Also includes non-consumptive uses suchs as recreation, eco-tourism, aesthetics, spiritual and crafts (stars, model train decor, floral arrangements).
Each week we will look at the “weeds” around the community exploring their edible, medicinal, traditional properties and uses. We will discuss harvesting, ethics, plant identification, and preparations. We will look around The Ville, Marysville Woods, Nashwaak River, and Killarney areas. Each week we are going to highlight 3-4 specific plant species that we can find in the various habitats.
